Everyone knows that serious illness and injuries can result in sizable medical bills. But one attractive feature of an HSA is that funds can help pay for routine care and treatment as well, including annual physicals, cavity fillings, and eye exams.

Contribute up to $4,400 per year for individuals and $8,750 for families

Individuals 55 and older can contribute an additional $1,000 annually

Contributions are tax deductible, and annual dividend earnings and qualified withdrawals are tax-exempt

Funds may be used for a wide variety of hospital, physician, dental, vision and mental health care, in addition to covering the cost of many medications

Any HSA funds left over at the end of a year are automatically rolled over to the following year

Upon reaching age 65, you may withdraw funds for non-medical purposes – though those withdrawals may be subject to taxes
