Accounts, Fees & Savings
DATCU offers Free Checking with Interest, Youth Checking, Mean Green Checking (for UNT fans), Small Business Checking, a standard Savings (Share) Account, Certificates (CDs), Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs).
Minimum opening deposit of $5
Dividends are DATCU's version of interest paid to member-owners on their savings accounts. They're calculated based on your daily balance and the current dividend rate, then credited monthly or quarterly depending on the account. Rates are posted here.
Current rates are always posted here. Rates change periodically, so check that page or call (940) 387-8585 for the most current information.
They let you lock in a fixed dividend rate for a set term. In exchange for keeping your funds on deposit for the term, you earn a higher rate than a standard savings account. DATCU's certificates require a minimum deposit and offer competitive rates.
Early withdrawal from a share certificate typically results in a penalty, which is a portion of the dividends earned. The exact penalty depends on the term length. Check the certificate disclosure at datcu.org or ask a branch representative before opening a certificate.

Many loan decisions, especially for auto and personal loans, can be made quickly, sometimes the same day. More complex loans like mortgages take longer. Providing complete documentation upfront speeds the process.
Loans & Credit
Yes. DATCU regularly helps members refinance auto loans, personal loans, and mortgages from other lenders, often at a lower rate. Contact us or apply online to see if refinancing makes sense for your situation.
A Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) lets you borrow against the equity you've built in your home. It works like a revolving line of credit, you draw funds as needed during a draw period and repay with interest. HELOCs are often used for home improvements, debt consolidation, or major expenses. Ask a DATCU lending specialist for current rates and terms.
DATCU offers products designed to help members build or rebuild credit. Contact a branch or call (940) 387-8585 to learn about current options available to help you establish or strengthen your credit history.
This is a type of mortgage/home loan refinancing that enables a homeowner take some of the equity in their home as cash. Simply put, it replaces your current mortgage with a new loan. After you pay off your existing mortgage and the associated closing costs, you will get the balance in cash.
  • Increased debt: If your financial position changes, like a job loss or serious illness, this could be very risky for your financial wellbeing.

  • Risk of foreclosure: Because your home is the collateral for the loan, if you cannot make your payments, you could lose your home.

  • Reduce home equity: By taking cash out, you are using up all or much of the home’ s equity you have built up over time.

  • Longer repayment term: When you extend the term of the loan and take equity out of your home, you are extending the term (length) of the mortgage meaning you’ll pay more interest for the loan.

  • Closing costs: When you refinance the loan, you will be required to pay closing costs and this can be a great deal of money.

  • Reduced credit score: When you take your home’s equity and refinance, your overall debt / liability increases and this might lower your credit score.

  • Flexible use of cash/equity: The cash equity that you take out of your home can be used for anything you want. It can be used for a child’s college education, to pay off debt, or whatever you deem important.

  • Single monthly payment: Here you are consolidating your mortgage and the cash-out refinance into one single monthly payment.

  • Possible tax benefits: Consult your tax professional because interest paid may be tax deductible.

  • Access to a large sum of money: If you have good equity in your home, it can provide the borrower with a significant amount of cash.

  • Potentially lower interest rate: A mortgage refinance is typically a lower interest rate than that of credit cards, revolving debt, or personal loans. If you utilize you home’s equity to pay off higher debt (debt consolidation) it can save you money from a decrease in your overall financial interest rate.

  • If you need a home improvement or renovation that will increase the value of your property.

  • If you have higher-interest rate debt that can be consolidated into a lower interest rate overall thus saving you money

  • Your financial situation has significantly improved , helping your qualify for a better term and rate of interest.

  • If you can keep at least 20% of the equity in your home, after taking cash out, thus enabling you to avoid owing an PMI (personal mortgage insurance).

  • A credit score of at least 640. The higher your FICO® credit score, the better interest rate you will get.
  • Overall, a debt to income (DTI) ratio that does not exceed 40%.
  • A Loan-to-Value (LTV) Ratio that does not exceed 80% of the home’s value
  • Proof of good stable income that enables you to make the monthly payments.
  • At least two (2) years of consistent employment.
  • The property type may be a primary home, secondary home, or investment property.
  • No late payments in the last twelve (12) months.
  • A current appraisal on your home.
  • At least 12 months of home ownership.
There are other options to a cash-out refinance to access equity in one’s home. A Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) may be a good option as well. Check out our HELOC web page to earn more about this option, or call 940.387.8585 to speak with one of our local loan officers.

A cash-out refinance replaces your current mortgage, changes the terms of your first mortgage, gives you access to the cash equity in your home, and can potentially offer a lower rate of interest.

A HELOC is a second mortgage with a fixed interest rate and term. A HELOC offers revolving credit with variable rates (normally adjusted quarterly) and flexible payments during a draw period which you access funds. It is good for ongoing costs or if you need flexibility in borrowing the funds.

Membership
You can open an account online at app.datcu.org, visit any of our North Texas branch locations, or call us at (940) 387-8585. The process is straightforward. You'll open a savings (share) account, which establishes your membership and makes you an owner of the credit union.
Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in Denton, Wise, Cooke, Clay, Montague, Collin, Dallas, Parker, Tarrant, Jack, or Grayson counties in North Texas. Students and alumni of the University of North Texas (UNT) and Texas Woman's University (TWU) are also eligible, regardless of county. And if a family member is already a DATCU member, including a parent, child, spouse, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, stepparent, stepchild, or stepsibling, you qualify too.
A share account is DATCU's savings account — and it's what makes you a member. When you deposit funds into a share account, you're literally buying a 'share' of ownership in the credit union. The minimum deposit to open a share account is small, and your shares earn dividends.
At DATCU, members are owners. Unlike a traditional bank where profits go to shareholders, DATCU is a not-for-profit cooperative. That means earnings are returned to members in the form of better rates, lower fees, and improved services. You also have a voice in how the credit union is governed.
No. As long as you maintain your share savings account in good standing, your membership is yours for life,  even if you move outside our service area.
Credit unions like DATCU are not-for-profit cooperatives. That doesn't mean we don't generate revenue ,  it means profits are reinvested back into the membership rather than distributed to outside shareholders. Our focus is people over profits.
Yes. DATCU is federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Your deposits are insured up to $250,000 per individual depositor, the same federal protection offered by FDIC-insured banks.
